Oats are considered as one of the healthiest foods in the world. Oats are 100% gluten-free whole grain foods that contain sufficient quantity of vitamins, minerals, fibre, and other compounds to promote a healthy body and mind. The benefits of consuming oats regularly include weight loss, balanced blood sugar levels, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, and more.

Here are nine proven benefits of consuming oats and oatmeal:

Oats are Incredibly Nutritious

Oats are an excellent source of carbohydrates, fibre (including beta-glucan), and contain more protein than the majority of other grains. Plus, they are full of important vitamins minerals, and antioxidant compounds as well. Half-a-cup (78 grams) of oats is known to contain:

  • Manganese: 191% of the Recommended Daily Intake
  • Magnesium: 34% of the RDI
  • Phosphorus: 41% of the RDI
  • Copper: 24% of the RDI
  • Iron: 20% of the RDI
  • Zinc: 20% of the RDI
  • Folate: 11% of the RDI
  • Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid): 10% of the RDI
  • Vitamin B1 (thiamin): 39% of the RDI
  • Lesser amounts of Vitamin B3 (Niacin), Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) Calcium, and Potassium

On top of that, 78 grams of oats also contain 13 grams of protein, 51 grams of carbs, 5 grams of fat and 8 grams of fiber, coming in at only 303 calories in total.

As you can see, oats are one of the most nutrient-rich foods that you can eat.

Oats Contain Antioxidants

Oats (especially whole oats) are rich in a special type of antioxidants called Avenanthramides (mostly found in oats). Avenanthramides are very beneficial because they play an important role in lowering high blood pressure thanks to their ability to increase the production of nitric oxide. Nitric-oxide is a gas molecule known to dilate blood vessels, which leads to improved blood flow in the body.

Additionally, avenanthramides are also known for their anti-itching and anti-inflammatory properties as well. And if that wasn’t enough, oats are also rich in another powerful antioxidant known as Ferulic acid.

Oats Contain Beta-Glucan

Oats are also a rich source of beta-glucan – a type of soluble fibre that dissolves water and forms a gel-like solution in and around the gut. This protects the gut lining from both internal and external factors alike.

The other important benefits of beta-glucan include:

Oats Lower LDL Cholesterol Levels

Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading mortality causes globally. One major risk variable is high LDL (also known as “bad”) cholesterol in the blood.

To this extent, multiple studies have emphasized the link between healthier LDL cholesterol levels and the consumption of beta-glucan from oats, as shown here. Beta-glucan has the property to increase the excretion of cholesterol-rich bile, which in turn reduces the levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream. Fact is, when LDL cholesterol oxidizes, this leads to the release of free radicals and increases the risk of ailments such as cardiovascular disease. And not only that, but this process is also known to produce inflammation in the arteries, which damages the organs and thereby leads to sudden heart attacks or strokes. A recent study has supported the evidence that antioxidants in oats work in a synergistic bond with Vitamin C to prevent oxidative stress from possible elevated LDL cholesterol levels.

Oats Can Balance Blood Sugar Levels

Type 2 Diabetes becomes more and more common among the world population. This disease impairs the body’s ability to utilise insulin properly, which leads to elevated or not ideal blood sugar levels.

Thankfully, research has shown that oats have the ability to balance blood sugar levels – especially true for overweight individuals affected by type 2 Diabetes. And not only that, but oats can improve insulin sensitivity as well. These beneficial properties are mainly due to beta-glucan’s ability to produce a thick gel-like substance which delays gastric emptying and therefore improves glucose control in the blood.

Oats Help with Weight Loss

Oats (especially true for oatmeal-rich foods such as Oatein’s own Flapjack Bar) can be delicious, but more importantly – a filling food choice. Consequently, eating filling foods can help you lose weight (and cut fat) in the long run.

What’s more, the beta-glucan in oats can promote the release of peptide YY (PYY), which is a type of hormone in the gut area responsible for telling your brain when your stomach is full. This hormone is shown to promote reduced calorie intake, thereby decreasing your risk of being affected by obesity.
