Optimum Nutrition's Gold Standard Whey is by far the best-selling post-workout supplement on the market. Gold Standard Whey is a combined WPI (Whey Protein Isolate), WPC (Whey Protein Concentrate), and Whey Peptides post-workout blend – a carefully crafted formula that builds lean muscle while also tasting deliciously great all at the same time!

By including Gold Standard Whey into your diet, not only will you chisel out the body of a Greek god – you’ll also get all the benefits Optimum Nutrition has to offer. These benefits include recovering muscles after an extended training session at the gym, pumping yourself with energy to crush those upcoming weight-lifting sets, treating your body with high-quality, healthy macronutrients, and more.

Gold Standard Whey is a blend that carefully mixes WPI, BCAAs, glutamine and glutamic acid for optimal results in the least amount of time. If you are trying to increase your lean body mass, we recommend fitting in 20-30g of protein per meal. This makes Gold Standard Whey the perfect snack in between meals or if you're on-the-go due to its 24g of protein per serving.

Given that many protein powders clump and make it harder to digest (and gives off a horrible taste), the engineers back at ON made sure that Gold Standard Whey never does this, ever. They employed a special, scientifically proven, accurately tested formula that flawlessly dissolves into liquid for easy gulps. Gold Standard 100% Whey can be mixed with water, yogurt, and even oatmeal – after which it can be enjoyed before, during, or after a workout. The secret?

Two words: instantised powder. ON Gold Standard pioneered the instantised powder that makes everyone’s lives a tad bit easier. After mixing the powder into your drink, the powder becomes perfectly textured – without the downside of getting gritty. How to make this deliciousness of a drink?

All you have to do is add the instantised powder to a liquid of your preference and stir for approximately 20 seconds. What you’ll get is an easily digestible, tasty blend – without suffering from that sinking feeling in your stomach.

Optimum Nutrition has paved the supplementation way which many now follow. This is why many professionals use ON products, including International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) pro Steve Cook.

Cook knows what’s best when he sees it. As a world-class sportsman, he has to be sure that the supplements he uses are of the highest quality, all day every day. This is especially true when Cook preps for an upcoming bodybuilding contest – as he opts for Optimum Nutrition products and nothing else.

A question we often get here at STN Nutrition is: “What is the Gold Standard Whey Flavour?” Since there is no easy answer, let’s try to break it down step-by-step.

Gold Standard Whey features around 21 flavours, where most of these flavours are available in the Gold Standard Whey protein 5lb tub (2.2 kg) size. The more exclusive flavours can be found in smaller sizes – while some of these exclusives are only available for a limited amount of time.

So with that being said, let’s break down the best Gold Standard Whey flavours.

Chocolate Variations

The chocolate variations are perfectly compatible with milk and make building muscles easy and something you’ll always look forward to. Currently, Gold Standard Whey features eight delightful chocolate flavours, including:

Chocolate Malt

This flavour is perfect for trainers who like to change things up a bit and introduce a new flavour to their daily protein regimen – without parting with the mild chocolate taste. Great for shakes, smoothies, or to fill your craving gap preferably between or after your meals.

Chocolate Coconut

What happens when you mix chocolate and coconut? Well, according to our performance experts, this would be the best thing since sliced bread. Optimum Nutrition has done it yet again, proving that protein powders CAN both be food for growth AND taste awesome at the same time.

Chocolate Mint

Chocolate mint plays with some additional ‘spiciness’ to stir things up a notch. Great as a gift to your significant other, or even just as a gift for yourself. This flavour is even better with skim or low-fat milk.

Double Rich Chocolate

Gold Standard Whey ON double rich chocolate is one of the most popular protein powder flavours to date – and probably the best Gold Standard Whey flavour as well. This one features an extremely rich hint of chocolate and is also perfect for making protein bars. Combine with cold water to thin out the richness.

Chocolate Peanut Butter

Probably one of the ‘thickest’ flavours – the chocolate peanut butter Gold Standard Whey is a perfect blend between juicy peanut butter tang and a subtle hint of exotic cocoa – all surmounting to a rich taste that will convert even the most intense doubters.

Extreme Milk Chocolate

This flavour features a barely noticeable hint of coffee – perfect for trainers who love the smell of coffee, but the bitterness of the brew doesn’t excite them as much. Extreme milk chocolate is only mildly sweet, and it mixes best with cold (preferably skim) milk.

White Chocolate

Gold Standard Whey white chocolate is bold, rich, spicy, and comes off as the perfect flavour to make bars or protein balls. The flavour is even better with the addition of either regular water or low-fat milk.

Mocha Cappuccino

One of the best Gold Standard Whey flavours – mocha cappuccino by Optimum Nutrition mixes equally well with water as it does with milk. Use water to thin out the rich mocha flavour, or mix it with any variety of milk to produce a mouth-watering milkshake-like protein shake. It’s just as good in both iterations.

Milk Variations

As of now, the Gold Standard Whey protein comes in 11 milk variations, including:

Cake Batter

Cake batter provides a very even taste and – for a flavour featuring the name ‘cake’ in it – this Gold Standard Whey protein 5lb variation isn’t that much sweet at all. Best if mixed with whole milk and drank as a thick shake.

Banana Cream

Not everyone is fond of banana-enriched products, but this flavour will definitely win you over in a heartbeat. The taste is even richer with skim or whole milk.

Caramel Toffee Fudge

Caramel has forever been thought as the go-to flavour for each and every occasion under the sun – now available in Gold Standard 100% Whey protein as well! The toffee fudge addition is just as tasty as it also sounds.

Cookies & Cream

This is the perfect taste for trainers who can’t resist the cookie flavour. Awesome to make shakes and protein beverages while on the move.

Cinnamon Graham Cracker

Spicy and exotic, this cinnamon graham cracker taste offers a subtle hint of sweetness, whilst also being the perfect flavour to make cinnamon-based protein pancakes with.

Everyone wants coffee…wait, scratch that – everyone needs coffee, so Optimum Nutrition have been kind enough to provide trainers with a deliciously mild Gold Standard Whey coffee taste. Goes best with full cream milk.

French Vanilla Crème

Vanilla is the one of the most popular Gold Standard Whey ON flavours, and is also the safest bet. With French vanilla crème, you can mix in some banana, blueberries, or yogurt. It’s also one of the best flavours to use for baking protein pancakes, protein bars, and more.

Delicious Strawberry

Who doesn’t like to indulge in a delicious strawberry flavour and build lean muscle at the same time? This taste provides a nice fruity addition so that trainers will never get bored – even after several months of continuous use.

Rocky Road

Perhaps not as crunchy as the original recipe, but nonetheless – Gold Standard Whey rocky road by ON is one of the most revered flavours in recent memory. Combine with skim milk for the ultimate mouth-watering taste.

Strawberry Milkshake

Great for anyone looking to chug a light and easy sweetened protein shake. Combine with real strawberries to add extra calories if bulking.

Vanilla Ice Cream

Vanilla but with an ice cream twist – this flavour is perfectly suitable for trainers who like to keep things simple but tasty. Additionally, Gold Standard Whey vanilla ice cream is simple, tasty and effective. Just what you need to bulk up without enduring strange and oftentimes bitter mixes.

Fruity Variations

There are two fruity variations in total, and they are:

Strawberry Banana

Featuring two of the most revered fruit flavours on the planet, Gold Standard Whey strawberry banana is one of the most popular fruit-based protein products on the market. Combine with 2 percent milk for a juicy shake.

Tropical Punch

This flavour is the more “fruity” of the two. Great to change things up a bit and introduce some variety of long-time Gold Standard Whey chocolate or vanilla users. The flavour becomes even better by adding ice-cold water or cold milk.

Flavour Winner: Gold Standard Whey Mocha Cappuccino. But then again, flavours are very subjective, so feel free to explore the variety of different Gold Standard Whey best flavours at your own leisure.

As we said, Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey is the most popular protein powder on the market. In fact, ON Gold Standard Whey Protein 5lb tub is one of the highest selling supplement products across a number of different platforms, including our own Second To None Nutrition supplement store.

This is why we took it upon ourselves to put this protein powder to the ultimate test and answer the following question in our Gold Standard Whey Review: is this product the best protein powder on the planet, or is it just an overhyped marketing ploy instead? Read more to find out.

Basic Facts

One scoop (32 grams) of Gold Standard Whey features 24 grams of high-quality protein (48% Recommended Daily Value), 3 grams of carbs (1% RDV), 1.5 grams of fat (2% RDV), and 2 grams of sugar. Our independent test has shown close to 22 grams of protein preserving, which is a negligible difference in the protein powder world. Plus, Optimum Nutrition is a company that features a solid track record with third-party laboratory testers, so this minor difference is pretty inconsequential when you consider the overall bigger picture.

On the other hand, one serving (85 grams) of Anabolic Armour contains 35.1 grams of protein, 15.5 grams of carbohydrates, 10.1 grams of sugar, and 0.4 grams of fat, where RDV is only highlighted for the respective micronutrients (Vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, E, Iron, Zinc, etc.) and not for the respective macronutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, and fat. This is not a major deal, since users can use this online calculator to calculate their own macronutrient recommended daily value in accordance with their body types and diets.

Still, percentage-wise, Gold Standard Whey ON features way more of the good stuff (protein) as compared to Anabol Nutrition Anabolic Armour.

Winner: Gold Standard Whey

For one of the most popular and inexpensive protein powders, Gold Standard Whey sure does feature a surprisingly medium-long list of ingredients. Here’s what Gold Standard Whey nutrition facts look like: Protein Blend made of Whey Protein Isolates, Whey Protein Concentrate, Whey Peptides, Creamer (including Sunflower Oil, Maltodextrin, Modified Food Starch, Dipotassium Phosphate, Tricalcium Phosphate, Tocopherols, Salt, Acesulfame Potassium, Aminogen, Sucralose, and Lactase.

Anabolic Armour is the quite the opposite, as it contains a surprisingly extensive list of the following ingredients: Sodium, Potassium, Tri Creatine Malate, Branched-Chain Amino Acids (L-Leucine, L-Valine, L-Isoleucine), Creatine MagnaPower, Vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, E, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folate, Biotin, Pantothenic Acid, Iron, and Zinc.

Crucial to note here is that branched-chain amino acids are one of the most important ingredients for natural muscle growth. With that being said, both ON Gold Standard Whey and Anabolic Armour contain BCAAs as well – with the only difference being that Gold Standard Whey does not show these ingredients explicitly (BCAAS are a part of every major protein type, including Whey Protein Isolate and Whey Protein Concentrate; in this light, they are a sort of a “given”).

Further, given that both protein products contain all the major protein types (WPI, WPC) – it would only be fair to say that they’re threading in equal grounds ingredients-wise.

Winner: Tie

Mixability & Taste

Whether you’re using a protein shaker or going for a nice blend instead – Gold Standard Whey mixes equally well by utilising both of these methods (as tested by our Second To None supplement performance team). In fact, this product takes only a few short seconds to blend and only a couple of additional seconds longer to stir in a protein shaker. When it comes to taste (Chocolate Flavor), Gold Standard Whey cannot yet beat the amazing taste of chocolate milk – but it comes surprisingly close, and that’s brownie points material.

When it comes to mixability, Anabol Nutrition Anabolic Armour mixes pretty standardly for a product of this caliber – so don’t expect to break records whilst mixing this product in your preferred shaker. If you’re opting for a blender instead, note that Anabolic Armour takes some good grinding in order to achieve the same texture as ON Gold Standard 100% Whey in the same amount of time.

Taste-wise, Anabolic Armour comes in close second to ON’s flagship amazing taste (also Chocolate Flavor).

Winner: Gold Standard Whey

Performance & Effectiveness

As we stated before, Gold Standard Whey Protein utilises a protein formula made of three protein types: WPI, WPC, and Whey Peptides. This is a very smart move on behalf of Optimum Nutrition since each of these proteins has different pros and cons and seeing them together can only mean the protein formula is sound. Additionally, the synergistic effects of these three major protein types enable this formula to promote fast and reliable results for anyone who looks to either:

  • Improve athletic performance
  • Build lean muscle mass and cut fat
  • Improve agility, performance, and focus

… or all three major benefits at the same time. Additionally, Gold Standard Whey ON also features a solid chunk of Aminogen and Lactase – two enzymes known for their ability to improve digestion and make the most out of your workout.

Anabolic Armour features less protein than Gold Standard Whey, so in this regard, it can be less powerful if you’re in a hurry for quicker results. Other than that, the added BCAAs in this product alone is worth the price of admission.

Winner: Gold Standard Whey

Gold Standard Whey comes in several packages and tubs, from 900 grams to 1.52 kg respectively (varied by different markets). If you want to buy the 1.52 kg tub, then you can get it for about $99.95 AUD. Currently, the most popular is Gold Standard Whey Protein 5lb tub.

Anabolic Armour is a little bit more affordable, with a 1.5 kg tub coming in at $79.95 AUD. Remember that Gold Standard Whey ON contains more protein per serve, so the slight difference in price between these two protein powders would be a fair trade off.

Winner: Anabolic Armour

Finally, let’s tally up the results:

  • ON Gold Standard 100% Whey – 3.5 Points
  • Anabol Nutrition Anabolic Armour – 1.5 Points

So, our ULTIMATE Winner is: Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder

As we mentioned, this product contains the following ingredients:

Whey Protein Concentrate

Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC) is a very popular type of protein since it contains very low amounts of carbohydrates and fat. This percentage largely depends on how concentrated WPC is (up to 90%). This type of protein is very popular among individuals who like to see results fast on a budget since WPC is one of the most budget-friendly protein types on the market.

Gold Standard Whey 100% protein combines WPC with two additional protein types for the ultimate bodybuilding results.

Whey Protein Isolate

WPI is a purer protein type that contains all of the amino acids that we need in order to achieve optimal health. In fact, WPI contains all three branched-chain amino acids (L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, L-Valine), which are crucial in triggering the muscle building process in the body. Out of all other amino acids, BCAAs are the most abundant in the muscles.

Further, WPI contains sufficient amounts of L-Leucine – one of the most revered compounds for promoting muscle protein synthesis, and consequently, 100% natural muscle growth. Also, it takes the body a high level of energy to produce L-Leucine, which in turn leads to burning excess fat. Finally, when compared to soy protein, WPI contains at least 50% more L-Leucine and is considered one of the purest protein forms on the market.

Finally, each serving of Gold Standard Whey contains 5.5g of amino acids, which is great for muscle repair and recovery. As we mentioned, branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are also held to a high regard since they repair damaged muscle tissue quickly and efficiently while also allowing for an immediate return to form after an intensive, often times damaging session at the gym.

Whey Peptides

Peptides are compounds directly derived from whey protein, or more precisely, from beta-lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin, lactoferrin, and immunoglobulins. These compounds promote immune, inflammatory, oxidative, vascular, and hormonal benefits as well. Gold Standard Whey protein combines Whey Peptides, WPC, and WPI into a synergistic protein blend that works wonders for your body.

Another question we often get is “Does Gold Standard Whey protein have any side effects?” The answer is more nuanced than it seems.

Firstly, excessive consumption of Gold Standard Whey ON can potentially lead to bloating, indigestion, gastrointestinal discomfort, flatulence, cramps, nausea and diarrhea. However, these symptoms may possibly (although very rare) occur among trainers who exceed the recommended dose and overtly force themselves while doing a workout. The combination of great physical stress along with an upset stomach can push the body into overdrive – and so these Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey protein symptoms can occur.

Secondly, the discomfort in the stomach is none other than your blood making a sudden surge into one area after fueling the extremities during a workout. When our bodies undergo through a strenuous physical activity, the blood from all over the organs is “drawn” to the extremities in order to fuel the muscles and provide an optimal environment for withstanding that stress (barbells, push-ups, squats). This is why we sometimes feel dizzy after performing a demanding physical exercise (or even standing up suddenly after long periods of sitting or lying down). Feeling bloated therefore is your body telling you that you don’t have enough blood in the stomach to perform proper digestion. On top of that, if you exceed the Gold Standard Whey recommended dose, then you’ll only make this problem worse.

Finally, the solution to this problem is to have a registered trainer build a training program that’s suitable for your wants and needs, after which you should rigorously stick to it. And do not exceed the recommended dose by any chance.

If that doesn’t solve the problem, then you’re probably affected by any of the following side effects of ON Gold Standard Whey:

Lactose Intolerance

This condition has been known to affect a large number of trainers from all over the world – Australia included. In fact, lactose intolerance can be found in up to 5% of Australians with European backgrounds, and an even larger percentage of those with Asian or Middle-Eastern roots.

Lactose intolerance is caused by the absence (underproduction) of an enzyme called lactase, which is responsible for breaking down lactose (milk sugar) into glucose. If this process doesn’t occur, lactose can pass through the digestive tract and cause undesirable symptoms such as bloating, cramps, indigestion, or uncomfortable flatulence.

As we mentioned earlier, Gold Standard Whey is engineered by using three types of protein: whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate, and whey peptides. WPI and whey peptides are very pure forms of protein, meaning they are 100% lactose-free. On the other hand, WPC is known to contain residual lactose, which can possibly cause some problems among some lactose intolerant Gold Standard Whey users.

On the upside, however, a large number of trainers would be able to handle the lactose in this product – mostly due to the added lactase. There may be a large pool of lactose intolerant trainers who may experience some side effects, varying in severity and length. Those individuals with a severe case of lactose intolerance should go for other protein powders instead.

Milk Protein Allergy

Milk protein allergy is a very different condition from lactose intolerance. While lactose intolerance happens because of troubles involving the enzyme lactase, milk protein allergy is an autoimmune response of the body that targets all dairy protein. The symptoms of this condition include sudden rashes, gastric discomfort, and wheezing, but in some rare cases are known to even cause tachycardia and anaphylactic shock. Trainers who are unsure if they are allergic to milk protein should stop consuming this type of food and should consult their local healthcare professional immediately.

General Protein Intolerance

Together with carbs and fat, protein is one of the three macronutrients that are absolutely essential to nurture a healthy body and a sharp mind. A protein-rich diet can provide a significant boost to your lean muscle mass, as well as keep your body in an up-and-ready athletic shape. So the question is: why don’t we eat protein, all the time?

Well, there is a limit to the amount of protein our bodies can handle. If protein passes through the gut undigested, it can cause a number of unpleasant and painful symptoms such as flatulence, diarrhea, and cramps. Some studies have shown that the maximum absorption rate of protein by the gut is somewhere around 8-10 grams per hour.

To combat this process, Whey Gold Standard contains whey peptides + Aminogen – which both help in easing the protein absorbing process by the gastrointestinal system and increase the amount of protein the body can handle (at any one time).

Still, some trainers may experience gastrointestinal discomfort which, thankfully, can be reversed by taking smaller protein powder doses – more frequently. Plus, ON Whey Standard does not contain any additional amino acids, so problems like drawing extra water in the gut should not become a concern.

Kidney Troubles

There are some rumors that excessive protein consumption can potentially damage the kidneys. A number of studies have shown that this is not exactly the case. In fact, a study by Jacques R. Poortmans and Olivier Dellalieux has concluded that healthy individuals can consume up to 2.8g/kg body weight per day, without any unwanted side effects on kidney health. However, if you’re unsure on whether or not you can safely consume protein, please consult your healthcare professional before consuming Whey Gold Standard 100%.

As you can see, most of the Gold Standard Whey side effects are, generally speaking, uncommon and mild in their nature. This is because this product is one of the purest protein powders on the supplements market.

Say goodbye to bloating, unnecessary digestion delays or acid reflux – Gold Standard Whey gets rid of all nuisances in one, big, calculated swing.

As stated, this product is especially great for those who have digestive issues and those who have problems with dairy and/or lactose products. If you tend to get an upset stomach with these types of product, then a whey protein isolate is perfect for you to prevent any sort of issues.

Gold Standard Whey IS the go-to protein supplement for all who are willing to try it – whether it is top-notch sportsmen who want that extra kick, or young starters looking for a motivational boost to gain momentum during their daily habits. Either way, it doesn’t get any better than Gold Standard Whey.

Ever since 1986, Optimum Nutrition has made sure that every product leaving their facility is of the highest quality, period. All of their manufacture facilities follow GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) compliant to engineer NSF certified for sports supplements that are currently being used by more than million people worldwide. And when it comes to the ingredients used – ON never falls behind. They use the highest quality raw sources and never reach for low-quality proteins like many other protein manufacturers do.
